About this work
Giorgione died of plague in Venice in 1510, still young, and left the Sleeping Venus unfinished. Titian, who worked beside him, completed the landscape and the sky. It is one of the first reclining nudes in Western painting — a goddess asleep alone in nature, with no story around her — and from it came Titian’s Venus of Urbino and Manet’s Olympia. The painting hangs today in Dresden.
The mosaic is narrower and longer than the painting, and the body, the hills and the town behind her spread out sideways. The skin is built of stones in pale pinks, on a white sheet and a red cushion.
