About this work
In 1872, after the war years in London, Pissarro settled in Pontoise. That same year Paul Cézanne, nine years his junior, came to join him, and for some two years the two went out to paint side by side along the same paths. Cézanne later said that Pissarro had been like a father to him.
The ground fills the lower half of the panel: stones in brown, mustard and green, laid at different angles like short brushstrokes.
