About this work
Chagall painted his father from memory, in Paris. His father worked all his life in Vitebsk, in a salted-fish merchant’s warehouse, lifting heavy barrels. In the Second World War the Nazis looted the painting from its Jewish owner in Łódź, David Cender, and only in 2022 did France return it to his heirs.
The face and the beard are Chagall’s colours, not the colours of skin — and in mosaic each of them is a different stone, not another layer of paint. (The work has been installed in a building.)
