About this work
Chagall painted Solitude in 1933, two years after his first visit to the Land of Israel, in the year the Nazis came to power in Germany. A Jew sits on the ground wrapped in a prayer shawl, clasping a Torah scroll; beside him a white cow with a violin, above him an angel, and behind, the town. The painting is today in the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.
The background is a solid black of dark stones, and the white — the prayer shawl, the cow and the angel — sits on it like light.
