Rami Alon looking at himself — with no source painting to lean on, and no other painter who has already decided where the shadow falls.

There is a timing here: he finished it at the end of March 2024, and six days later began "Portrait of Fräulein Lieser" — the first of the homages to Gustav Klimt that would take 527 working days over the next two years. The self-portrait is the threshold he crossed into them.
