Paris, after Van Gogh met the Impressionists and Pointillism and broke up the dark palette he had brought from Holland. The strokes radiate outward from the face like a halo.

That halo is the difficulty: for Van Gogh it is a brush movement carrying outward, and in mosaic it has to be built as rows of stone fanning from the centre.
