About this work
Adele Bloch-Bauer is the only person Klimt painted twice. The second portrait, from 1912, abandoned gold for colour. After the Second World War her family fought Austria for the return of the paintings, all the way to a United States Supreme Court ruling in 2004.
Klimt stretched her into a tall, narrow format, 190×120 cm, and the figure floats inside a column. Rami Alon made it almost square, 124×112 cm — a deliberate change of proportion. The figure stops floating and settles into the frame.
