About this work

This is the painting that stood on Klimt’s easel in his studio on the day he died, in February 1918. The background is crowded with birds and flowers borrowed from Chinese art — phoenix, lotus, crane and pheasant. The sitter has never been identified.

A painting stopped in mid-work leaves open questions: where the fan ends, where the ground begins, what exactly happens at the edges. A painter can leave an area loose; mosaic cannot — every surface needs a stone, and every stone is a decision. Rami Alon had to close what Klimt left open.
