About this work
"Mousmé" is a word Van Gogh took from a Japanese novel he had read; he wrote to his brother Theo that a mousmé is a Japanese girl of twelve to fourteen. The sitter herself was an unnamed Provençal girl, holding a sprig of oleander.
Van Gogh painted a rectangle; Rami Alon made a perfect square, 50 by 50 cm — and the shortest in the exhibition.
