About this work

In October 1982 Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol met for the first time, at a lunch arranged by the dealer Bruno Bischofberger. Basquiat went back to the studio, painted a double portrait of the two of them, and within two hours sent a courier with the picture to Warhol — the paint still wet. Warhol kept it. Basquiat was twenty-two.

Basquiat painted in a coarse, flat line, with no shading and no depth — the head is contour and patch, which is exactly the structure of a mosaic, and among the shortest here.
