About this work
An unusually tall format — 120 cm high against 60 wide, a column the eye travels down.
The work shows birds, and it is their movement that gives it its name: the wings are not spread for flight but drawn in lines that read as movements of dance — a lift, a turn, a passage. These are not birds flying but birds dancing.
And mosaic is the least suitable material for describing movement: it is static, rigid and divided into units. Here the movement is built from the direction of laying — the rows of stone themselves flow in an arc, and what moves the eye is direction rather than line.
