About this work
Klimt painted the Attersee landscapes almost always square, dense, and often through a telescope that pulled the far shore close and flattened the distance. "Church in Unterach" of 1916 is among the last: the village houses crowd together like coloured tiles, with almost no sky and no horizon.
Rami Alon made it 102 by 102 cm against Klimt’s 110 by 110, holding the painting’s proportions beautifully — the village, the wall, the church and the trees sit exactly where and at the size Klimt gave them. And here there is a rare meeting: Klimt had already painted this landscape like a mosaic, his houses adjoining coloured squares.
It is also the last work to enter the exhibition, in June 2026.
